Program Instructor/Assistant/Helper/Volunteer Expectations

On behalf of White Township Recreation /S&T Bank Arena, the following expectations have been developed for those that are assisting with one of the many recreation programs that are offered. White Township reserves the right to reassess and change any individual and/or program structure or expectation at any time, if it deems necessary.

Expectations and instructor training may vary from program to program, however, many rules apply to every program and will be discussed, by either the Recreation Program Director or the Lead Program Instructor prior to the program starting on the day of the program/camp/clinic/special event.

  • Dress/Attire:
    • Recreation Program and Ice Program instructors/coaches/helpers/volunteers
      • Keep in mind, who the program is for and dress age-appropriately; no bare mid-drifts are permitted
        • Please refrain from wearing crop tops
      • Dress appropriately for the program
        • Athletic attire is permitted, but be professional
          • Refrain from wearing oversized clothing that inhibits easy movement/demonstration
          • Refrain from any suggestive, revealing, vulgar, alcohol-related, etc., clothing
        • Golf-style shorts and athletic warm-ups are permitted
          • Please be conscious of short-length and avoid wearing mesh-style shorts
    • Learn to Skate/Figure Skating instructors
      • IPA Skate Team Members – Please wear your specific IPA Skate Team coaching jacket, sweatshirt, hoodie, etc.
      • IUP Hockey Players – Please wear either your IUP Hockey Jersey or any IUP Hockey Team clothing
      • Indiana High School Players – Please wear either your Indiana High School Hockey jersey or any IHS Team clothing
      • IYHA players/coaches – Please wear either your IYHA jersey or any IYHA Team clothing
      • If you are assisting and not a member of any of the above organization, please wear a plain black jacket
        • Please keep in mind that shorts are NOT permitted to be worn on the ice for program instruction
        • Hockey Sticks and Pucks are not allowed on the ice during Learn to Skate
        • If your hands tend to get cold while you are coaching, please wear gloves
          • Refrain from keeping your hands in your pockets during the session
        • Hockey instructors
          • Please speak with Phil or Gavin for more specifics
    • Expectations/Rules:
      • Cell phone use during the program when instructing/helping/volunteering is not tolerated
      • Headphone use is not permitted during program sessions
      • Be prepared
      • *Lead Instructors:
        • When selecting program dates, please select days and times that you can commit to and will be able to attend
          • If schedules change and you are no longer able to attend, commit to or move forward with the program please provide the Recreation Program Director either a qualified replacement instructor with additional assistants OR adjusted program dates that you can attend (only if registration has NOT been advertised and opened when the change occurs)
        • Be present for questions/comments prior to the program starting AND after the program finishes
          • Lead instructors are NOT permitted to coach private lessons within 30-minutes prior to the start of the program they are running
        • The Program Director will attempt to attend the 1st Day of each program to make introductions with the Lead Program Instructor/Volunteers and parents/participants
          • It is the Lead Instructor’s Responsibility to make their own introductions at the start of the program for his/herself, as well as their assistants/volunteers/helpers to BOTH parents and participants to establish familiarity and explain any rules/expectations/necessary information/schedules that they may have of the program and its participants
        • If you plan to work with Youth:
          • Please obtain your clearances.
          • For 10 participants between the ages of 4-10, plan to have 2 assistants in addition to the lead instructor minimum
      • *Lead Instructors/Assistants/Helpers/Volunteers:
        • If you commit to a program, please make sure you can attend each session of the program
        • Start the program/camp/clinic/special event on time
        • Engage with the participants
          • If someone needs help, help them, do not just move along
          • If someone is falling behind, go back and work with them to bring them up to speed with the group
          • Pay attention to everyone, not just those that are excelling
          • Keep everyone moving and engaged
        • Let the lead instructor/coach lead and filter in where and when needed; do not wait to be told what to do
        • Absolutely no swearing or telling kids to ‘suck it up’
        • Be motivational, make the kids want to come back
        • Do not stand around and talk with the other coaches; focus on the participants
        • If someone asks you a question that you do not know the answer to, that is ok, don’t make up an answer, just refer them to someone that will know the answer
    • Learn to Skate-Specific Expectations/Rules:
      • Assist new participants entering and exiting the ice
      • Alert the Skating Director if there is an injury, disruption to class, or if a participant needs to leave the ice
      • When re-tying or exchanging skates, the lead instructor should maintain control of the class and the assistant should complete the needed task; alert the Skating Director if assistance is needed
      • Remember to keep all doors closed to the ice surface as much as possible
      • No child, parent, coach, or participant should ever enter the ice surface without skates on
      • Attempt to keep all parents out of the hockey boxes during the Learn to Skate session
      • *Reminder: All participants need to wear a helmet to be on the ice and participate: no exceptions
      • All program specific, evaluation level and skate changing (figure to hockey)-related questions should be directed to the Skating Director
